Spring TV Guide for Cord Cutters

Antennas_SpringTV2016
Eight of the biggest television moments of the first half of the year are on the horizon and the good news is that cable or not, no one will have to miss any of them. A lot of people worry about cutting the cord. The good news is that as more people take the leap of faith, streaming services become more willing to provide their service, so you don’t miss all the action!  Check them out in this quick Spring TV Guide for Cord Cutters

March Madness

Starting March 15, March Madness is the event of the year for College Basketball fans. 64 teams will battle it out through the weeks until April 4, and the championship in Houston, TX. If you want to watch the games online, I’ve created a complete March Madness Guide to help you out. But the short of it is, Sling TV will allow you to watch all the TBS, TNT, and TruTV games. You can then use an antenna to watch the games on CBS for free.

The Americans

The Season 4 premiere of The Americans will be here on March 16 on FX Network. Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell star in the critically-acclaimed drama about two KGB operatives posing as an American couple in Washington D.C. during the Reagan presidency. If you need to catch up on this before the season 4 premiere, Amazon Prime has the first three seasons included in their Prime membership. From then on, the easiest way to get the show would be to purchase the new season with a season pass on Amazon.

Daredevil

The second season of Marvel’s Daredevil will hit Netflix in its entirety on March 18. This is significant for Netflix, as this was their first of many Marvel shows, and after a huge first season that was applauded by critics, there are high expectations for this sophomore season. As with all Netflix originals, they are released together and remain on Netflix, so if you haven’t watched this superhero drama about a blind crime fighter in Hell’s Kitchen, you have plenty of time to binge-watch the first season before season two premieres.

The Walking Dead

Season 6 of The Walking Dead has already been filled with moments that have shocked, and sometimes delighted viewers. On April 3, the finale happens and if it’s anything like past finales, you can expect to be wowed, if not absolutely shocked and devastated. The easiest way to watch The Walking Dead would be Sling TV.

NBA Playoffs

The Playoffs are always a big event for basketball fans. This year, the playoffs start on April 16. It’s unclear at this point what games will air on what network, but we do know the games will air on ESPN, ABC, and TNT. This makes Sling TV your best bet for the majority of games, though you will be able to catch the ABC games free with an antenna.

Fear the Walking Dead

The second season prequel of the smash hit The Walking Dead begins April 10. Telling the story of a new group and what happens at the very beginning of the zombie-outbreak, Fear the Walking Dead offers a new group of characters and a fresh setting in which to sink our teeth into. While not quite as highly rated as The Walking Dead, it’s still a great watch. There are a variety of ways you can watch this show, but the easiest would be Hulu, which also has all of the first season currently available, as well.

Game of Thrones

For TV fans, Game of Thrones and its April premiere (this year on April 24) is always a major event. Last year, HBO NOW was just unveiled right before the premiere and there was a worry that Game of Thrones fans would break the Internet as they rushed to watch it. This fantasy show is filled with danger, death, dragons, and plenty of adult themes. If you haven’t seen some of the episodes, you won’t need to worry because the entire series is available on demand on a variety of services.

NFL Draft

On April 28, the most hardcore sports fans will be parked on their couch watching the results unfold in the NFL Draft. This is when the best NCAA players and a few unknown wildcards receive their entrance into the NFL. As the Draft generally occurs on cable, the best way to catch it would be Sling TV.

Get the TV You Want without the Expensive Cable Contract

Chances are there are easy, legal ways, to watch anything you want no matter what channel it’s on. As cutting the cord continues to move further into the mainstream, it will only get easier to watch everything you want online.

2015 was the Year of the Cord Cutter

Unbreakable-Kimmy-Schmidt

2015 was the year of the cord cutter. We have dubbed it so. People cut the cord in record numbers, thrilled to finally break free from their unhealthy relationship with cable. There’s not just one thing or moment that we can pinpoint that drove people to this breaking point, but we have a few theories.

  1. Prices increased, yet again
This is a never ending battle, and people are finally getting fed up. They’re not stupid, yet the cable companies continue to treat their customers like a bunch of idiots. Who’s the idiot now?
    netflix and chill
  2. Streaming kicked ass
Thanks to Netflix originals like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Grace and Frankie, Masters of None and Hulu special The Mindy Project, streaming programs are offering shows you WANT to watch. With the growing trend of “Netflix and Chill”, it’s become more socially acceptable to not have cable.
  3. The public is smarter
While the cable and pay-TV companies continue to treat their customers like they’re dumber than a box of rocks, it’s obvious that they are actually smarter than ever before. Look at the growing number of people breaking free from cable, it’s obvious that they’re brilliant. They know it’s time to sever ties and start pocketing that cash. Here’s to you, cord cutters. The smartest guys and gals around!

Options for cord cutters continue to grow. In the past, cord cutters have struggled and had to MacGyver ways to get the content they desire. Between streaming services, a la carte options, streaming devices and growth in over the air broadcast channels, there is enough content to make any cord cutter content.

If 2015 was the year of the cord cutter, then we predict 2016 will be the demise of the cable companies. Bold prediction? Maybe. But we’ll take our chances.

10 things you need to know about Digital TV Antennas

Antennas Direct Clearstream 4 Roof shot

Digital TV antennas have come a long ways since your grandma’s rabbit ears antennas you grew up with. Here is our list of the 10 things you need to know about modern day digital TV antennas.

  1. Broadcast signals are superior to cable and satellite.

There are no paid subscription fees to receive over-the-air (OTA) television, and the picture and sound quality is far superior. In addition, OTA broadcasts are free from the signal compressions used by cable and satellite giving you unadulterated high definition television.

  1. Unlock new local channels.

Cable and Satellite providers do not carry all the channels that may be available in your area. In fact, most broadcast stations offer additional regional programming, absolutely free. These channels include local news, sports, cooking shows, kids programming along with classic TV shows and movies.

  1. All the major networks transmit signals free over-the-air.

You don’t have to pay for some of the content you receive on cable or satellite. The broadcast networks are paid for by advertisers, not subscribers. All your local news, weather, sitcoms, cooking shows, kid’s shows, sports and thousands of movies are available free with an antenna.

  1. ‘HD’ or ‘HDTV’ antennas are some of the more common names used for digital TV antennas.

All digital antennas receive the same picture and sound quality; we just give them a familiar name. Some broadcasts will be in full HD while others are broadcast in standard definition. The real difference is the uncompressed signal received with an antenna.

  1. There are channels, and then there are sub-channels.

Each broadcast station sends out a signal on a frequency (channel). This frequency will provide many ‘sub-channels’ containing your programming. For example, a channel broadcast on channel 8, would appear on your TV as sub-channel group 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 etc. Each channel, aside from its main service can be broadcasting additional programming on 1 to 4 sub-channels simultaneously.

  1. Antennas are a great compliment to any cable or satellite subscription.

Complimenting your television setup with a digital antenna will come in handy the next time your cable or satellite blacks out. During emergencies or bad weather, receiving OTA signals to your TV with an antenna will keep you informed. Much like a radio, the frequency is more reliable and less subject to interruption.

  1. Find the broadcast towers before you choose an antenna.

When choosing an antenna, remember that every set up is unique to the location in which you live. Click HERE to learn more about antenna selection.

  1. Hills, trees, and buildings bend, deflect, and weaken signals.

The digital TV signal is a ‘line of sight’ signal. Typically, the higher you have your antenna, the better the reception. While signals pass through walls and other surfaces, the more obstructions the signal encounters, the weaker the signal and this causes signal disruption. The clearest, most unobstructed view to the broadcast towers will allow the antenna to perform at the highest level.

  1. 3 things you need to receive over-the-air digital broadcast TV
  • A television with a digital tuner (found in any TV manufactured after March 2007)
  • The right antenna for your specific location. See here at Antenna Point
  • The knowledge of broadcast tower locations in your area. Point your antenna toward them and bask in the glory of OTA, free television.

10. There is no magic antenna.

Antennas come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each designed for a specific situation. Some are narrow focused (directional) antennas; while others are multidirectional both with various range capacities. Well-designed antennas, such as our patented Tapered Loop, are tuned for specific frequency ranges and geographical challenges, which will increase your chances for success.

There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution in an antenna. To help you choose the right antenna, view our Antenna Selection Page or Live Chat with an expert now.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

  • Outdoor installation is best, but Antennas Direct antennas can also be installed indoors or in attics. (50% strength/range is lost indoors).
  • Simple, direct connections and installations are best. The more junctions in the installation, the higher the signal loss.
  • Each time the signal is split (to go to another TV) signal strength is reduced, so a low-noise amplifier may be needed to help compensate for the signal reduction.
  • Install the antenna where signal is “present”. Move the antenna to different locations until signals are found. Many times one end of the roof or room has better signal characteristics than the others.

World Cup Last 16 is here.. Free Your TV!

Last week we provided you with the Complete Cord Cutters Guide to Watching the World Cup. One great way as a cord cutter to experience the World Cup is to tune into the match on Univision and listen to the game on ESPN Radio. (Note: there is a 45 second delay on the audio stream. Press pause on the video for 45 seconds to sync up the audio). Team USA faces a formidable opponent in Germany today. What are their chances and how can you make sure you don’t miss out on any of the action?

Even the powerhouse teams like England and Spain have been sent home early, but for teams from the Americas it is still business as usual. A team from the Americas has risen victorious every time the World Cup has been held in the Americas.

European hopes are pinned with Germany, Holland, France, Belgium and Greece. Despite the late upset against Portugal, USA is in a strong position ahead of today’s meeting with Germany, so how can we make it through to the last 16?

World Cup
USA beat Germany: We go through top of the group, and play the runner up from Group H (Russia play Algeria right after the game to decide this, while Belgium look to progress a Group winners here).

We draw the Game: USA is through in second place and play the champions of Group H.

USA lose to the Germans: Then it is up to Portugal v Ghana to decide our fate. We will all be looking for a nice draw from that fixture to ensure the US progression in the competition as a win for either team would leave it to goal difference to decide who progresses. If we are to lose, we will be hoping Portugal defeat Ghana as they are currently worst off on goal difference at minus 4.

Watch the game live for free over-the-air on Univision or go to futbol.univision.com for a free live stream! See the complete guide below.

Thank You to Our Followers

Vince Lombardi once said, “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.” While we are not attacking a football team’s defense, we have seen some of our most loyal customers voice their opinions against a problem in society…cable TV.

If you have visited our Facebook fan page lately, you might have noticed a lot has been going on. Our team of OTA watchers have come out like the ‘59 Packers, ready to bring back a victory for over-the-air TV. In some instances, our followers are faster at responding to questions on our wall than we are.

From Psb Satellite telling DirecTV “where to shove their dish” to Sean Kirkland talking about Antennas Direct’s MicroSite, it is a pleasure to log on every day.

We would also like to point out that Psb Satellite even noticed that Homer Simpson installed a DB4 antenna on his home, showing that our customers have a passion for our products. We sincerely enjoy that Antennas Direct customers find our Facebook page as a place to come and share ideas to help each other, not a sounding board for how much they hate our company…ahhem Charter….

We can not thank our follows enough! Antennas Direct was founded around listening to our customers and we plan to continue listening to you into the future.
