What you can (and cannot) expect from your antenna<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Imagine\nyourself standing in the antenna aisle of your local big-box retailer or\nsurfing the Internet comparing antennas. One box says the antenna inside can\ngrab stations from 100 miles away. Another product\u2019s description boasts that\nit\u2019s a 4K antenna. Or, maybe you saw the one claiming it can deliver cable\nchannels! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve\nheard it all and seen it all. There\u2019s no governing body or industry oversight\nto check the claims being made when it comes to TV antennas. That means there\nare many false claims being circulated today. A recent Texoma\u2019s article<\/a> even talks about the multitude of \u201cantenna scams\u201d present in the\nmarketplace. Antennas Direct refuses to play that game, and we always have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2003, we\u2019ve been on a\nmission to educate the public about the virtues of watching free, over-the-air\nTV in HD with a TV antenna. Today, our continuing mission is to build upon that\neducation, freeing people not only from their bad relationships (and endlessly\nincreasing bills) with cable and satellite but also from the bad information\nthey may be faced with when making the decision about which antenna to\npurchase. Here are the top three things you need to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Antenna Range Claims<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Scientific fact: The Earth is round. (Sorry, flat-earthers.) The curvature of the Earth will block most over-the-air broadcast signals at roughly 70 miles. According to the current laws of physics, it is generally impossible to deliver the 100 and 150-mile range claims some antenna manufacturers boast. While you may receive signals from farther away in absolutely ideal conditions (a home atop a hill whose broadcast towers are directly on top of another hill with a clear shot between the two and absolutely no obstacles) or you\u2019re inclined to engineer a unique (and probably dangerously tall) setup, then consistent, reliable reception of anything over 70 miles away should not be expected. Range can also be impacted by factors such as location, obstructions in the terrain around you, other buildings, the location of transmitters on the broadcast tower, and other variables. Antennas Direct\u2019s founder, Richard Schneider, raised his concerns about these dubious range claims in a TechHive article<\/a> earlier this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Channels You\u2019ll\nReceive<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You may be thinking that\nwatching TV with an antenna will bring you back to the old days of antennas,\nwhen only a handful of stations were available. Today, most areas in the United\nStates broadcast 50+ channels over the air. Locations like Los Angeles have as\nmany as 175 channels. We\u2019re talking about over-the-air broadcast television\nchannels -which are transmitted in Full HD 1080p and with 5.1 surround sound-\nwhich you receive for FREE once you have a TV antenna. In addition to your\nlocal NBC, CBS, ABC, CW, and FOX affiliates, you\u2019ll also find a wide variety of\nspecialty programming available on these stations. So much content is available\nthat we like to call it \u201cthe new basic cable\u201d. Keep in mind, these are network\nand local channels. You will not receive any pay-TV stations via a TV antenna.\nWe\u2019ve seen antennas claiming this possibility, but it is 100% false. You will\nnot receive ESPN, CNN, or any other such channel with your antenna. Period.\nThat said, there are many new streaming options becoming available to\ncord-cutters all the time which combine broadcast TV content with packages\navailable for purchase to watch sports channels, pay-TV subscriptions, and\nmore, all from one\nstreamlined platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 4K Antenna<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As of writing this, OTA\ntelevision is not yet broadcast to the general public in 4K. However, that\ndoesn\u2019t stop unscrupulous antenna companies from claiming that (only) their\nantennas will allow you to watch broadcast TV in 4K. The truth is, once 4K\nbroadcast television becomes available, any antenna will be able to receive<\/strong> it. What you, the\nTV-watcher, will need in order to view OTA television in 4K is a device\nwhich will be capable of decoding the transmissions your antenna receives so\nthat you\u2019re able to watch your shows in the new 4K standard. This can be a TV\nor a designated TV tuner, for example a set-top box. We believe that our ClearStream™ HDTV\nAntennas<\/a> will deliver the best, most reliable picture quality we\u2019ve always\nbeen known for when that day comes, which is why we indicate on our packaging\nthat all our antennas are \u201c4K-Ready\u201d. Until then, 4K-quality picture has become\navailable through mediums such as Blu-Ray\u00ae and certain streaming services, but\nbroadcast television viewers will need to wait until the new\nstandard of television<\/a> arrives to local airwaves in the near future to view\nover-the-air television in 4K. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
