Cable Won't Carry the HD Super Bowl in Several Major Markets

January 18, 2006, ST. LOUIS, MO -- You've taken the big step and purchased an HDTV set, just in time for the biggest game of the year- Super Bowl XL. But are you sure that you'll be seeing the game in high definition?

In at least 14% of the top 50 television markets in the country, the local cable provider does not have a carriage agreement with the local ABC affiliate for the HD signal. As a result, people in markets such as St. Louis, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Columbus, Norfolk, Sacramento, Greenville, NC and Greensboro, NC, will only receive the analog Super Bowl signal.

"This is big news in the HDTV community right now," Richard Schneider said. "For those consumers affected by this, the only way to see the Super Bowl in HD is with an antenna."

Schneider is the President of Antennas Direct, a St. Louis-based company that manufactures off-air rooftop antennas for HDTV sets. His company is launching a national campaign to make HDTV set owners more aware of this and.

The campaign theme is Declare your Digital Independence. HDTV owners can log on to Antennas Direct and download the Digital Declaration of Independence. Schneider encourages consumers who are upset with their cable company's high fees and poor service to sign their Digital Declaration of Independence and experience HDTV with an antenna.

Schneider also has events set up in St. Louis and Minneapolis where consumers can come out to declare their digital independence, and receive a free antenna. The St. Louis event is scheduled for Saturday, January 21 at The Sound Room in Creve Coeur. The Minneapolis event will be held at Halsten Entertainment in Golden Valley on January 28.

According to Schneider, while some markets don't have the ABC signal in their digital cable, in other markets it could be a different network. For instance, if you are planning to enjoy the Winter Olympics in HD, it may be a good idea to find out if your cable company has the digital signal for NBC.

Antennas Direct is a St. Louis-based manufacturer and distributor of Terrestrial Digital off-air HDTV antennas. The company was founded in 2003 by Richard Schneider, and continues its fast paced growth and recognition from the HDTV community.
