Generation Ys Latest Trend: Cord Cutting

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Get out of the way baby boomers. The Generation Y’s are leading the way of how you guys used to watch TV growing up. They are becoming the predominate movement of over-the-air (OTA) television viewing today.

Gen Y’s are intrinsically tuned in to trying different forms of how to watch TV.

They are not chained to their parent’s cable\satellite boxes and own the technical

know-how of how to watch TV in different mediums.

Glen L. Friedman, president of Ideas & Solutions Inc., stated, “1 in 5 Generation Y’s have never purchased subscription-based TV or are former subscribers who have cut-the-cord.”

“1 in 3 of Gen Y’s have considered ending their cable subscriptions. They are more likely to own an iPad, have a wireless connection and subscribe to Netflix.” All they need is the link to OTA television.

Friedman’s firm research did test the notion that, rather than being a phenomenon tied to a poor economy, the number of cord cutters would continue to grow even once things got better.

A key obstacle that needs to be addressed to advance the rise of cord cutting is the low public awareness that broadcast television is still out there in the air.  It’s still free and looks nothing like what your grandparents watched. Spread the word.

Antennas Direct HDTV Antenna ClearStream4 Review

Friday, October 21st, 2011

By Kevin Hughes

OutdoorTvAntenna.net,  October 17, 2011

Antennas Direct ClearStream4 HDTV Antenna allows great reception from digital markets as far as forty miles away. I have tried most of these antenna products at different times and Antennas Direct makes one of the best outdoor antennas I have ever used.

Since the switch to digital, I am in an area where there are multiple markets within reach of a good antenna and I have found that I can give up cable without missing much because I can get so some many popular stations in the area.

When I decided to change antennas I was hoping to improve my reception and reach all the tri-cities stations. To my amazement I am now picking up stations from 85 miles away in another state. Since all television is digital now, the reception is crystal-clear. I can now tune-in 53 stations and have better viewing options than I had with my cable service, which I have since dropped.

I am now saving over $60 a month on cable and I do not miss it a bit. Cable stations play the same movies over and over and after a while, you can seldom find a new movie you have not already seen.

This HD TV Antenna comes with the following.

  • Provides HD reception for digital television.
  • Weather-resistant.
  • Is easy to install without calling out an electrician.
  • Provides long-distance reception to areas you may never have reached before.
  • Provides local stations for those whose cable or satellite systems do not carry local stations.
  • Brings in stations for rural customers who cannot afford cable or satellite TV and offers them the chance to reach many stations.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to get 40 or fifty stations with this Antenna Direct thanks to digital television. This is great for rural customers, those who cannot afford cable or satellite or those who simply are tired of paying ever-increasing rates for cable. With this many free stations, paying for cable is a joke. I have more variety now than I ever got with my cable service. And it is free.

Antennas Direct ClearStream4 HDTV Antenna Features

1. Those living in metropolitan areas can get so many stations they can simply drop their paid service and still have great variety of program viewing.
2. The antenna provides sharp HD local stations over the UHF band with digital sharp clarity.
Is very affordable  less than $100, about the price for one months cable bill.

Up In The Sky, It’s Antenna Man!

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

The owner of Freedom Custom Communications in Portland started the “Antenna Man” commercials after more and more of his customers started asking about antenna installation.  Trevino says antenna installation is about 20 percent of his business.  He’s happy with that but hopes it will grow.  He says Portland broadcasts more than 20 H-D channels over the air, which means you don’t need cable or satellite to watch them.  He thinks more and more people are switching to over-the-air tv because of the simplicity and the high cost of cable.  He says with streaming, Internet tv and Portland’s over-the-air offerings, there are more options out there for less money.

Broadcasters Are Now Worrying The FCC May Sell Off Bandwidth Following The Debt Crisis.

Friday, July 29th, 2011

We all are figuring out that the FCC wants the size of the airwaves used by broadcast television stations to decrease. The FCC says that it’s voluntary and needed for the increasing wireless services of today’s consumers. Television broadcasters say there’s no promise, it’s voluntary and it could be the final “off the air” for some stations around the country.

Dale Zabriskie, with the National Broadcasters Association, says that in the event of the Internet and cell phone reception going down, broadcast television will still be available to the public in case of emergency.

“Flooding, wildfires, all of those things we still need free over the air broadcasting there,” says Zabriskie.

We agree that free over the air broadcasting is the only fault tolerant media we have in extreme weather conditions and national emergencies.

Utah is a state that would be greatly affected by such a FCC sell off. Utah has the smallest percent of penetration of cable in the United States.

Are You Afraid To Cut The Cord? Defer Your Cable Service To Test The Waters!

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Parting ways with your cable or satellite provider can be a lot like ending and bad relationship.  You know you want to but change is hard. Or is it the fear of the unknown?  Well,  as for your cable or satellite relationship, you can test the waters without any regret or fear.  Suspend your service for up to 6 months!

Unknown to their customers, many cable and satellite providers have a loophole that allows users to suspend their service for a certain time period. This loophole is called “vacation mode” or “seasonal mode”. This is allowed for customers that have extended work periods, hospital extended stays, etc. The great thing about this policy is that you can use it to your advantage to buy yourself some time and refine your new media consumption lifestyle of cutting the cord…

For example DirecTV will allow you to suspend your service for 6 months at no charge and you still get to keep your equipment if you want to go back. We know you won’t! Many other providers like Comcast, Time Warner and Dish Network also offer similar options to pause your service.

So, embrace your breakup with you cable or satellite provider and enjoy the freedom of having that cord cut to them.

Has Pay TV Peaked?

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

On the whole, the increase of pay TV subscriptions has dramatically declined.

About 100 million households pay for TV service through cable, phone company lines or satellite. For the first time, that number dipped slightly last spring and summer. Though the losses have since been recovered, it’s a sign that pay TV may have reached the saturation point, with 89 percent of homes connected by wire or satellite. Throw in cheaper or free Web options, and more viewers will be cutting the cable cord, says Ian Olgeirson, senior analyst at SNL Kagan, an investment data and analysis firm.
